As a child I didn’t understand why humanity couldn’t accept others differences and see through to the similarities of the core truths in each of their religions.  As a child and growing teen this frustrated me a great deal.  As a result I pulled myself out of all “churches” and followed my own path of spirituality…one that rang true in my heart…one that focused on connection, not separation.  I focused on the similarities that are common to religious faiths.  I focused on the fact that I only saw and felt One God, One Source…and that this God was a kind and loving God.

I am forever grateful that my early path led me where I stand today.  I stand firmly rooted in my belief that we are One People under One God.  I stand true in my tolerance of other’s personal beliefs…and I pray that the core truths in each of them are what guides us all onward on our paths.

Compassion and The Golden Rule. Simple.  It seems to me this fits nicely with Deepak’s recent request to the people of the world to take a Vow of Non-Violence.  If we simply live compassionately (with Unconditional Love)…and live by The Golden Rule it seems to me we would be living heaven on earth!

I choose Compassion.  I choose The Golden Rule.  I choose to embrace my brothers and sisters across the planet and sing praises for our unity and understanding!

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE that artists use their talent and their ’star quality’ to shine on in sharing messages that reach the masses.  Dave Stewart, formerly of Eurythmics, birthed this song together with Bono some time ago.

When he saw what was happening in the U.S…w/Election ‘08…when he saw that change could indeed come to America, and as a result to the rest of the world his inspiration took fire.  He co-created this amazing video with other starry friends like Colbie Caillat, Forrest Whitaker, Whoopie Goldberg, Jason Alexander, Macy Gray and many others as well as some incredible every day citizens, just like you and I.

Here are some notes from Dave Stewart explaining a bit about the song…and why it feels to him like such an inspired time for American Prayer:

“The song always contained one of my favorite passages from Dr. King, which was hauntingly delivered the night before he was assassinated. King says: “I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!” People long for a connection— whether it is to music, to their country, or to a big idea. Regardless of what happens in November, Senator Obama has reminded millions of people that they have the power to connect to bigger ideas. He is, in essence, the embodiment of a new anthem for change. He has continued King’s narrative from what was once thought of as a dream to a reality. I find it especially relevant that Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party Nomination for President 45 years to the day of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
When we were originally writing the song, Bono was crafting the words in a way that would make people think about the fact that ‘America’ as a concept was a truly great idea, based on the bedrock of equality. I find it more pertinent than ever to release it now; to the moment America finds itself in, daring to re-imagine itself and its place in the world.”

It’s a NEW DAY…INDEED!  It amazes me how we can wake up one day and seriously find ourselves refreshed and filled with Hope, Courage and the Willingness and Determination to be the change we wish to see in the world.  This is always my prayer…and I have to admit, it feels a whole lot easier these days!  The road is long and perhaps steeped in some difficult times yet ahead.  But, hey…It’s a NEW DAY…filled with promise!  Are you feelin’ it??  :0)

I just got turned on to Ingrid Michaelson and her new single, “Be OK”.  I like Ingrid’s simple style…and she’s playing an UKULELE!!  :0)  Makes me nostalgic for my sweet Kauai…

Not only is the song great, as a bonus Ingrid chose Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) as her charity of choice for proceeds from this song and the same titled CD.  Go Ingrid!  Way to make a difference…and give us the opportunity to do the same.  :0)

Ingrid asked her fans to send her photos of themselves with “Be OK” painted on their faces.  The response was so overwhelming that she decided to make a video montage with all the pictures.  This video is so new…exclusively at Border’s at the moment that I couldn’t post it here today.  …watch for it…

A few days ago I posted, “Let Your Love Create Your World”. In that post I shared the lyrics to a song that our homeschool kids used to sing on Kauai. The song has always stuck with me; it’s catchy, fun and has great depth of meaning.

Now, I have to say I know I’m not the best singer in the world (far from it, I know)…but there’s something about singing this song that just feels good! So no worries, I won’t be auditioning for American Idol any time soon, and I know it’s “pitchy” (thank you Randy Jackson!)…I just wanted to share it so that those of you who were wondering which tune to put to the lyrics could wonder no more. (Well, sort of.) Now if only technology allowed for sing alongs! :0)

I won’t be surprised when I hear someone standing next to me in the grocery store humming the tune…it’s catchy…and it WILL BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY! :0)

Our family has been very blessed with raising our children slightly out of the plugged in culture. We started home schooling our son when he was 7 allowing us to do more as a family. We moved part of our work schedules home so we could be with him more, eat together and share our lives more fully. Moving to Kauai in 2003 was another way for us to unplug our family. We think it has made a difference in our son’s ability to be more present. We still deal with the consumer culture. Our children still want far more things than I ever though I needed at their age. Its an interesting world we live in this consumption culture. I don’t see how it can be sustainable forever.

My struggle to save my kids from consumer culture

A war is raging between parents trying to raise children and corporate America trying to raise customers. As a parent of three children, I think I’m losing, or at least losing my mind. I’ve tried to educate my children about our materialistic society and how our family values differ from those of a culture of consumption. My kids, however, want more, buy more and throw away more.

I’ve decided advertising is my biggest enemy. Thanks to ads, my kids won’t take no, no, no for an answer and instead nag, nag, nag. Advertising targeted to children in the United States is estimated at more than $16.8 billion annually, over twice what it was in 1992.

For me it has been a practice in learning to let go of responsibility and be in the creative flow. When I make decisions from a place of creativity flowing from heart, spirit and higher mind I can live and work in a place of harmony with myself and everything evolving around me. I am filled with life and creativity. The opportunity for meaningful multidimensional success in the long term relates to being present with the moment and doing from there.

I’ve been practicing not sweating the small stuff and focusing on resonance and connection with the flow of our ideas, projects and teams. Everything comes together and it flows in right timing. Ease and grace is very important in my work life.

Zen Habits has some great recommendations for creating a peaceful work day.

Here’s how I do it.

1. Do less. Those of you who know me by now saw this one coming. It’s very difficult to have a relaxed workday if you have too much going on. Instead, learn to reduce what you do, but choose the most impactful tasks and projects — the ones that will mean the most over the long term. I choose three important things to achieve each day, as I’ve said before. Those are the three things I can do today that will have the most impact in my life.

The whole universe is an aperture though which I look through. Everything exists as it does because of the relationship to that which surrounds it. We are inseparable from our surroundings. We humans try to improve the world and in this process we destroy the natural world because our language and understanding is far to simple for the natural world.

Everything is happening all at once… all over the place. We have one track minds in an infinitely multi track universe…
